Speaking From Experience// Initial Ideas

Speaking From Experience

Design Sheets // Thought Process

When it came to the first crit presentations in our small groups it was good to know that they liked my idea and had nothing bad to say about it only stuff I could add to it. Someone came up with the idea of having peoples facebooks near or under their portrait so if a first year wants a question answered quickly they can. I am going to select the most approachable people to be in the booklet as I wouldn't want there to be any awkward moments!

Managed to make a massive error on this questionairre. I wrote 'Comparative' instead of 'Corporative'.
So I went round this room and asked the first years whether they had been corporative this year with any of the Second years. In response to this I had 12 people saying 'NOT AT ALL' and 15 saying 'A LITTLE' and 0 saying 'A LOT'. Most people admitted to talk to the second years out side of the course. Not in the studios.

BOOKLET

I want to steer away from making another hotdog book. That and I don't think a hot dog book will be big enough for this. I want to make a simple book. One that can just be stapled together.

Band W Studio

I found this on bandwstudio and the layout is simple. Its quite friendly too, quite a odd thing to say about a layout but when comparing it to my idea it works. The representation of the man holding the glasses in front of hgis face has elements of humor. Not to mention the yellow circle next to him which I associate with the sun, which is a warm and happy subject.

Looking at the left hand side it has elements of fear and death. You can just see the skull. This is where I could possibly add elements of humour into my booklet. We all know that staying on the right side of Fred is always a wise decision. Its something that we laugh about on the course. Get the work and done and keep fred happy! There could be a page similar to the one above. Demanding, block capital letters with Fred's face behind it? Could work and could be really effective. Thinking about this I want to content of this to really work and then keep the design simple but professional. I will try and find some reference now to express what I mean.

Bureau Bruneau

This one here is very simple but has class, I found this on design spiration.com which is a great way of finding new design or design to inspire you. I like the 'Picture This' with the simple black lines above and under it. I'm not sure but this almost looks like an introduction page to a magazine. I think Bureau Bruneau does a lot of stuff on music. Found him!

'I mainly work with printed matter ranging from visual identities to editorial design and packaging. The ideas behind my projects varies from technical to emotional concepts.
I graduated from the Graphic Design department at Westerdals School of Communication in 2010. After working at Uniform for one year, I did an intership at Sagmeister Inc. in New York. Now, I'm currently working at Bleed in Oslo' - bureaubruneau

TASK 5// Who Are You?

Sam Hoh

about Sam Hoh: I have written out a short interview for Sam to Answer and this will be the content to my double page spread. I have also answered for Sam just incase it comes handy.

Who are you?

My name is Samuel Hoh, I'm originally from Nottingham now a resident of Leeds. I came from NCN Art & Design foundation and I am currently studying Graphic Design at Leeds College of Art.

What is your earliest memory?

Im not sure this is the first memory I have, but who is sure? anyway I remember discussing with a young chap in nursery school that his name couldn't be Sam because that was my name. Thinking back he could of had the name Sam id like something a bit more exotic.

Which living person or persons do you most admire? How had he/she influenced you?

Not including members of my family (which I think everyone generally acknowledges without acknowledging) I currently admire Mark Emery - Incarcerated in America for selling cannabis seeds. I along with many people think his arrest and imprisonment was political. I admire his courage, honesty, intellect, passion, truth and strong will for justice.
If you could bring four people to a secret dream dinner party. How would they be?

Again not including family I would bring back the John Wayne, Bob Marley, Albert Einstein and Bruce Lee.

Where would you most like to live. What would you do when you lived there?

I wanted to live in America but i'm not totally sure. I have family in Malaysia and the country is wonderful but I cant imagine myself living there. Amsterdam? because the city is fascinating, full or graphic design and art and the people are friendly.
Would type of design do you want do in the future?

I would like to do contemporary design which is current. Anything that involves creativity with smart concept.

What other plans do you have for the future?
I really want to be my own boss and have a design house of my own. If I had a clothing label that would be ideal.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Probably getting on to this course as I think it will lead to bigger and better things. I have improved an astonishing amount and my whole idea of graphic design has changed and has been re defined.  I think more possibilities have been highlighted and I can see a bit further into the future now.

Any last words?
Do more, talk less.

................................................................................

Here are the measurements for my double page spread.

The heading title // possible pull out quotes:

NOT my final design. This is just something I can now play around with and work into. I know that I have'nt been religious with design sheets but the ones I drew up on paper I found to be of my liking. The next stage for me is to play around with as many designs as possible and come up with something that I am happy with and that I can finish with. The design above I am not happy with. The layout isn't perfect and the photo doesn't look right. I might end up adding some more text or shapes just to give it a bit more flavour but with out making it un legible and busy.

PAGE BREAKERS. I decided to design some page breakers and a nice yet simple way of making to page more legible but at the same time visually pleasing.

These have quickly been done on photoshop and without noticing they have become very over pixualated and I can no longer experiment with it. The next step is to go on to illustrator with this new font (NELMA) and live trace it. I might just work in illustrator. I was getting very tired of my old layout  as it was very bland. I do like that look in design but its very easy to do but very hard to make look right.

.........................................................................................................................

Above is a new idea, All I have changed is the colour and I have traced Sam's name in Chinese.

I'm not happy with how this is looking. Its far to simple and I feel I can change this by making the text more interesting.

Corner design!

I think this is a good way to make the article feel more inclosed, gives it a sense of scale.

To make the layout work better for this article I have added two more questions for sam to answer. Once that is done I am going to play around with the interview so that it perfectly lined up with the main 'SAM HOH' text. Once that is done I believe that this will be finished. I intend to sit sam down and go thorugh his one for me and of course my article for him. I think that will help us tweak it a little further to make it perfect. When we go to crits we will both be able to comment correctly on each others work.

As you can see I have put Sam's portrait inside the 'o' but in my eyes its radically changed the design. I makes perfect sense to have it there but I don't think it looks right. Because they article is all vector based having a real life representation seems odd! I can't word it that well but I sense it doesn't work too well. I want to ask some people what they think.

TYPOS AND 'WHO ARE YOU' has the wrong answer!

....................................................................................

Initial idea is to create some sort of publication that will help new students. Maybe a book that will be given to them at the beginning of the year that warns them of the hard year ahead. I found that I wasn't expecting the course to be as intense as it has been already, of course I have massively benefitted from this but I think they should know how our experiences have been this so they have some idea of what to expect.

3 messages that you want to Deliver: 5 Reasons why that needs Delivering.

1) My experiences of my first year at the college/ what I (or the year in general) thought of the it all.

  • To give them a better idea of what to expect in the year ahead.
  • To make them feel like they know where they are going, bring them out of the dark.
  • Make them feel comfortable with us, the 'second years', make them feel like they can talk to us.
  • Have an idea of what WE think of the course, rather that tutor opinion.
  • Warn them of certain things to look for, things that could go wrong but can be avoided.
Ways it could be Delivered
  • I am only going to do one bullet point but I thing the best way for these ideas as a whole is to have it in some sort of booklet filled but easy ways to understand their knowledge of the course. The booklet would have infographics in side and pullout posters.
2) Best ways to Save Money

  • Keep Students on top of their money
  • Help them save money for certain things like printing
  • The right food to buy on a tight budget.
  • The best places to shop for cheap food.
  • Worst places to shop for food.
Ways it could be Delivered
  • A survival guide
  • THE SURVIVAL KIT!
  • Info-graphics posters
  • Wall Charts
  • Student starter kit to money
3) Best Places to go out in Leeds that will suit them
  • Help them find the right places for them
  • Help them discover the pubs and clubs with the cheapest drinks
  • Help them discover the best places to eat food
  • Help them discover the clubs that play the right sort of music for them
  • A good way of promoting certain places in Leeds that might need attention.
Ways it could be Delivered
  • A map of leeds
  • Freshers starter pack
  • Info-graphics poster
  • Guide to going out. Where to go and where to avoid!
  • Wallcharts
