Speaking From Experience// Beginning Stages/ Email Replys

First thing I need to think about is the people I would like to be in my publication. I want to find people who could and will be approachable for the next first years.

Across 2 pages (Double page spread) there will be people. Two on each page. The publication will be quite thin but I think the content will be enough to satisfy. I intend to have an introduction too.

My question in the email

............................................

Hello!

Please could you write a paragraph on your first year experience here on the course- you might like to involve:
-the highs of it
-the lows of it.
-Things to look out for.
-workload.
-the tutors.
the atmosphere etc.

Try and add something random that will make your paragraph different from the rest. the idea is to warn

The video on the website about our course has a student talking about his thoughts and he mentions some interesting things.

'the workload is big. If you don't want to do it then why are you here?'

I am making a small book with your thoughts on your first year! I will need to steal you all to photograph you but that won't be for a while (2 weeks?)

Try and add something random that will make your paragraph different from the rest. the idea is to warn them on what might happen to them!

I want them to have a better understanding of what to expect next year as I feel we didn't. I want the relationship better us and next years first years to be much stronger than it has been this year

Please get back to me as soon as possible and your help is much appreciated. If you have any questions what so ever please come and ask me.

Thank you!

Simon

Introduction

You will focus on the fundamentals of visual language, thinking and analysis within the context of graphic design. You will explore practical and conceptual research methods and effective studio practice in relation to the areas of type, language, image, narrative, meaning and message. Your studies will focus on the use of typography, print, drawing, digital media, photography and the moving image. This fast-paced programme encourages group dynamics and individual practice, but offers the time for reflection
and evaluating your progress.

Second page? I go this off the official graphic design page on the website. Thats the information about first year.

Hi Guys, Im Steph Buck and  have just recently taken on the 1st year of Graphic Design at leeds college of art. So there are quite a few highs of being on this graphical experience, I think one of the biggest highs has to be meeting people who enjoy design as much as you do and actually having a laugh with these people. Being on the course on a full time basis allows you to make friends easily and makes the studio relaxed and quite an amazin' place to be in. Creating so many types of design work allows for a leniency in freedom and expression whilst learning and tackling everything about design theory. The only downside to the course i feel is that it's very hard at first to organise yourself to keep up, but once you do it becomes so much easier and you get into a comfortable and worth while routine. If i was to start the course again i would look out for second years work and influences more in terms of artists they use etc. Its good to get knowledge on this subject as it opens up your research and allows you to gain a better knowledge on graphic design. Workload is heavy guys. Its hard to balance so many different aspects at once but it pays off when you sit back and realise just how much you've learnt or created. Even though there is a hell of a lot of work - staff and course mates are always happy to help + there is the bonus of e-studio which you can use the calendar and timetables to help organise yourself. Tutors are sick. They offer help and advice and make you work for what you can achieve. They push the whole year to get us used to the 'design world' but we also enjoy a bit of banter here and there which is always a bonus. Each tutor offers a different approach that can help everybody out in a different way so thats amazing, and they always will listen to what you have to say. Out of the studio the tutors organise a pool tournament for all 3 years of the course which is on-giong throughout the year. Also cake days and design fairs are always a good-en to attend. When your in the studio there is a few things you might need a quick heads up on, probably the best one to know is that you should always respect the space around you - which sounds like the same old- but I have learnt that a studio is THE space to learn, practice, develop and encourage others, so if it's respected then it will only make you a better designer. Erm i'd say to also not play music too loud, when briefs are going on and all that stuff then it's prob for the best to lower the volume or you will 1. be embarrassed and 2. get yelled at - not too good haha. But the atmosphere in the studio is amazing and as a year group you will gel a lot quicker then you think. It's a nice area to have a laugh, to be a lil' nosey or just to crack on with some work but overall it's a pretty cool place with some pretty cool people.
I don't think anything major bad will happen to 1st year students, DON'T BE LATE and make sure your punctual to everything. Keep your organisational skills tip-top and make sure you hand in your deadlines on time. Other then that just do what you enjoy doing and you should be fine. Peace x

  • Module deadline- Clear A2 folder, get them organised and prepared a day before so on the submission day... it will be a piece of cake!
  • Print room in Blenheim Walk building is not as good as the print room in Vernon street- The staff down there are more helpful, the environment are warm and welcoming. Be polite to Roger, don't get on his bad side!
  • Take your ID card when you go to library, you get student discount!
  • When printing, purchase your own stock, they are much cheaper!
  • Don't trust the guillotine!
  • Book a print slot as soon as you can!
  • Vending machine- Use your common sense, if it look like it's not going to fall/drop down then it will get stuck!
  • English breakfast in college cafe is a no-go!!! It's full of oil and cold! It will make you sick after :/
  • Signing in sheet- SIGN IT!
  • Tutor- don't ask them too much questions, they will get really annoy even if they are the one who asked us 'are there any questions?'
  • Briefing on Monday is a day that you really, really shouldn't be late!
  • I shouldn't say this but... 5minutes late to lectures is totally fine- other courses does it :P
  • Bakery 164 is the best place for foods!!! Cafe is terrible, try avoid it if you can.
  • If you can be bother... go into Leeds University Student Union... there are lots of nice foods and shops in there- there are indian, japanese, cornish pastry foods shops and lots of nice hidden cafe as well as a vintage shop inside the union.
  • Fresher fair was really good, try going if you can- plenty of goodies. There are one in our building and one in Halo.

You will not feel like the same person in a year. This course will begin to change you. You may try to fight it, but it is inevitable. My first year at LCA has been a vibrant mix of highs and lows. One of the biggest lows of all is realising you know absolutely nothing about graphic design. However, that is why you are here, and that is why one of the biggest highs is coming to realise that when you leave you will be armed with a professional set of skills that will be very difficult to rival from other graduates in the country. This fact is something you will begin to understand as you take on the thorough nature of the course and it's way of tuition. Having already been to University prior to LCA I can personally tell you that the tuition here is not like that of a University institution. You will know the tutors, and they will know you. In this sense, the move from an A-Level or ND is a little less intimidating.
There is a lot of work to be done here and this may get the better of you at times especially during the period after Christmas and Easter, however there is no greater satisfaction than handing the work in knowing that you have everything done to the best of your ability. So just stick at it. Don't be intimidated by the blogging, it is slightly difficult to understand at first, but you will get the hang of it within a couple of weeks I promise you.
A heads up: ALWAYS turn your phone on silent/off vibrate when you have any form of briefing. ALWAYS listen to everything, this will mean you will not need to ask questions you should already know the answers to. The latter seems ridiculous, but you will be surprised how much you miss through lack of concentration during a briefing. ALWAYS attend no matter what, it will make your life easier, you will learn that there is no such thing as illness.
The biggest thing is to enjoy what you are doing here. If you love graphic design you will love this course, and if you treat it with respect, there is no end to what you can get from it.
